do it my”sels”

This photo of Sophie was taken just before we had to take the crib down. Sophie was around 18 months when one night she started climbing over the railing and jumping down to the floor. She completed this maneuver over and over and over. Just as she hit the floor, she would run down the hall yelling “I’m ok!” This was WAY BEFORE I was ready to put the crib, that all three of our girls slept in, away for good. But it went down the next day. We were afraid she would get hurt.

Being the youngest-she definitely didn’t want to be the baby. Her favorite phrase was “I do it mysels” (that’s how she pronounced “self”) whenever we offered to help her with anything. She is by nature (even as a baby) independent, energetic and determined. Knowing this about her, it should not have been a surprise that she is ready to move out. She is a senior in high school. She had the first day of her final term today. Today is also the day that she signed an application for her first apartment. She and a friend found one that is available May 15th! It is in a fantastic location and really is perfect for them-BUT MAY 15TH! I assumed we would at least have the summer with her home under our roof.

My heart was in a bit of turmoil thinking of all of this change. It happened quickly and just like the day that we had to take the crib down, I wasn’t quite ready. I prayed for help-for her and for me. On my walk today this photo came to my mind so clearly and I remembered who she is-and always has been. That little one that always wanted to do things herself is showing us again how strong and capable she is! My heart immediately settled down and a smile spread across my face. She has been preparing me all along.
